Interview with 2011 Show Me Shorts Best Actress Winner, Nicole Gulasekharam

10 janv. 2012
Nicole Gulasekharam is an Australian actress best known for her roles in 'Bed of Roses' and 'As the Bell Rings'. She recently took home the StarNow award for Best Actress at the Show Me Shorts Film Festival for her performance in the Australian film The Kiss.

StarNow: We noticed that your acting credits go back to when you were quite young! When did you decide you wanted to be an actor? And how did you first get into acting?
Nicole: It started when I won the role of Annie in ‘Annie’ the musical at the Regent Theatre when I was nine years old, which to this day I believe to be the biggest fluke! But that’s where I fell in love with the idea of playing different characters and people. So I started taking acting lessons, got a couple of jobs, and now I’m hooked!

StarNow: Who is your agent? And how did you find them?
Nicole: I am currently with Ian White Management. I knew them through a course I did, and through friends.

StarNow:Is it very different acting in a film than it is for TV? What advice would you give any budding StarNow actors?
Nicole: Both film and TV are lots of fun and really stimulating. With film, it’s great because you can take more time to work out your journey from start to finish before it begins. With TV, you may not necessarily know what’s going to happen to your character, which can also be exciting! My advice is to get as much training as possible, and of a wide variety. You don’t know if something will work for you unless you’ve tried it.

StarNow: Have you been to many unsuccessful auditions? We hear it’s hard work dealing with the rejection, but all part of the job. Have you ever had a disaster audition? And what pearls of wisdom did you learn from it?
Nicole: I am the master of unsuccessful auditions! I haven’t had any disasters as such, but have definitely learnt that if you’re not prepared, then there’s no point doing it. You’ve got to make the time and put in the work for auditions, but when they’re over, you just have to forget about them and move on. I believe that the best way to come out of an audition is: “I am really happy with what I did, so what’s for dinner?”

StarNow: We see that The Kiss has won a few awards at festivals in Australia and New Zealand - that's great! Has the film’s success helped you in your career? What’s next for you, Nicole?
Nicole : I absolutely loved making The Kiss. The people I met while making it were all so talented and lovely to be around, which definitely helped make the film a success, and I hope I will get the chance to work with some of them again in the future! Who knows what’s next for me? I’m just really trying to get as much training as I can, so I'm ready for anything that comes my way.

StarNow: What's your StarNow profile address, so other members can find you?
Nicole: You can check out my profile here.
